Oil Pulling

All You Need to Know about Oil Pulling
An Effective Natural Treatment for Mouth Hygiene
I first heard about oil pulling a couple of months ago and I can say that at first I could not fully understand what exactly this method involved. I think that “oil pulling” is a misnomer for this effective, natural way of mouth cleansing. In my opinion, “oil swishing” would be a more descriptive term, but proponents of “oil pulling” support the accuracy of the name, because, as they maintain, it has to do with the oil pulling bacteria out of the mouth.
I rest my case.
Not a new practice
Even though the trend has been growing fast in recent years, oil pulling is not a new practice. It is believed to be one of the many Ayurvedic Indian traditional health practices that date back more than 3,000 years and it is regarded as an effective way to remove harmful bacteria from the mouth and preserve the health of the gums, teeth and the whole of the mouth cavity – and not only. It seems such a simple procedure that you can hardly believe it can be so beneficial.
The practice became popular in the west in the early 1990s and it has since been adopted by a large number of alternative medicine practitioners as an effective home remedy for oral hygiene, but not as controversial as whitening your teeth with charcoal!
What exactly is Oil Pulling?
As I have already written in one of my previous posts:
“Oil pulling is an old folk, home remedy for keeping the mouth in excellent health. The method is based on the use of some high quality vegetable-based oil which you swish in your mouth for about 15 to 20 minutes each time. This can improve the health of your gums, prevent or cure gingivitis, reduce plaque that has formed on your teeth and remove harmful microorganisms that inhabit your mouth and cause bad breath.
There is proof that oil pulling can reducenumber of Streptococcus Mutans bacteria in the mouth the ,
Oil pulling can leave your mouth clean from bacteria, help your gums become healthier and firmer and make your teeth whiter by removing plaque. To put it in a simple way, what Oil Cleansing can do for your skin, oil pulling can do for the health of your mouth.
What kind of oil to use
Despite the fact that some people may not find the idea of swishing a small amount of oil in their mouth for 15 to 20 minutes very appealing, the process is quite easy and I can assure you that you will get used to it after the first couple of times.
As for the kind of oil you should use, it all depends on your taste. People in India, for example, are used to the strong taste of sesame-seed oil, while in the west people are more accustomed to the milder taste of sunflower oil. Whatever your choice, go for the best quality you can find – organic and cold pressed.
For me, the best choice is coconut oil because of its high content in lauric acid that makes it ideal for  fighting Streptococcus Mutans bacteria that can cause cavities in the teeth. Lauric acid is the reason coconut oil is often used in several brands oftoothpaste and deodorants. Moreover, coconut oil, which is often used as a coffee creamer, has a really pleasant taste and it’s easier to swish in your mouth without causing a gag feeling.
Just have in mind that coconut oil is in solid form in temperatures below 24C, so if your house is not warm enough in winter time you will need to keep it in your mouth for a couple of minutes before it liquefies. And, of course, coconut oil has dozens ofother uses. You can use it in cooking, as a skin cream or even hair balm!
Some people who may not like the taste of coconut oil can try MCT oil. It is more expensive but has the same benefits as coconut oil and quite a different taste. And always remember that by adding a few drops of essential oil in MCT oil you can have a more pleasant experience.
