What is the Best Toothbrush?

Brushing your teeth with a high quality toothbrush is of utmost importance. An old toothbrush with worn bristles decreases the effectiveness of brushing, so always remember to replace your toothbrush every two to four months and prefer one manufactured by a reliable company.

We all know how important oral hygiene is and preserving it takes, apart from frequent visits to your dentist, regular brushing in order to remove all food debris and prevent the formation of plaque. Moreover, the frequent brushing of your teeth removes harmful bacteria which can cause tooth decay and bad breath.

Choose the Best Toothbrush for You

Studies have shown that most toothbrushes manufactured by reputable companies work effectively without any of them having a distinct advantage over others. What seems to make a real difference is how a toothbrush is used, e.g. the brushing technique and the frequency of brushing, rather than the size, the softness or the way bristles are placed on the toothbrush.

However, there are certain points to have in mind when choosing the right toothbrush for you:

Hard or soft toothbrush: Most dentists recommend the use of a soft toothbrush especially for those who brush their teeth regularly and for about 2 minutes each time.  A soft toothbrush can also clean more effectively between the teeth and below the gums without causing any feeling of discomfort. On the other hand, a toothbrush with hard bristles is usually recommended for those who face gum recession.

Electric or Manual Toothbrush: If you brush your teeth regularly, for the recommended time and in the right way, you won’t need an electric toothbrush. However, an electric toothbrush can be ideal for teenagers who often neglect their dental hygiene. Also, for those who are rather reluctant to brush for the recommended time an electric toothbrush with a timer will motivate them. Price is a disadvantage of electric toothbrushes, but if you feel an electric toothbrush best suits your needs, a less expensive model would work as effectively as a high-priced one.

Use your toothbrush the right way

Always try to brush all the inside and outside surfaces of your teeth without forgetting the back teeth and the horizontal chewing surfaces. Brush your teeth and reach down carefully to the base of the teeth and down to the gums. Gentle brushing does not harm your gums; on the contrary, it makes them firmer and healthier.

Brushing time should be around two minutes each time and if you want to remove all remaining food particles and prevent plaque from forming between the teeth, don’t forget to floss carefully right after brushing.

Finally, you can use a mouthwash to give your breath a fresher sensation. Using a mouthwash before going to bed is the best way to prevent bacteria from forming during your sleep. Also, remember to brush your tongue gently after you brush your teeth in the morning to ensure a fresh breath during the day.

It takes only a few minutes every day to keep your mouth and your teeth healthy without having to spend a fortune. You can also use a home teeth-whitening kit, or whitening toothpaste to remove stains and enjoy a beautiful, radiant smile.
